IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY OPENS SEASON WITH ROMP (2018-12-01)

CHENANGO VALLEY - Newark Valley opened the season on an impressive note, rolling to a 59-37 non-league victory over Chenango Valley here Saturday.

The Cardinals got after it right out of the gate, scoring more than one-third of their points in a 20-5 first quarter run. Bri Beebe posted eight points in the opening stanza. Mackenna and Tressa Nechwedowich combined for seven more, and Kendra Morris went 3-for-4 at the free throw line.

NV put up 14 more points in the second quarter to build a 34-14 halftime cushion with contributing two more baskets and Beebe draining her second 3-pointer of the afternoon.

Gracie Gardner scored six of her 10 points in the third period and Mackenna Nechwedowich registered two buckets in each of he final two quarters to finish the day with a game-high 15 points. She would also contribute three assists, three rebounds and two blocks, and Gardner would add a team-high three blocks.

Tressa Nechwedowich and Beebe scored 11 points apiece, and Beebe also chipped in nine assists, eight steals and four rebounds.

Hannah Ferguson pitched in with six points, Kendra Morris scored all her points at the line (4-for-6) and Sarah Mertson had the other NV bucket.

Calista Smith led the Warriors with 15 points.

The Cardinals are back in action Tuesday with their home opener against Waverly.
