Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Candor found a way to slow down Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in the second half of Friday night’s season opener. Unfortunately for the Indians, they were unable to overcome a 4-point halftime deficit in a 45-42 non-league loss.

After giving up 32 first-half points, 17 to senior forward Kiser, the Candor defense solidified, allowing only 13 in the second half.

The Indians ran into foul trouble early and often, sending three starters to the bench early in the second quarter. Two Candor players ended up fouling out, as the team amassed 24 fouls, compared to 12 for their opponent. V-V-S shot 16-for-29 from the charity stripe while Candor went 4-for-6.

Candor trailed, 13-8, after the first quarter, but rallied for a brief 24-20 lead in the second period. Sophomore Braelyn Hornick knocked down a 3-pointer to open the quarter and senior Searra Allen added a trey to give Candor a 21-20 edge. Thirty seconds later, Allen canned another three to push the lead to four.

The Red Devils regrouped and went on a 12-0 run, fueled by Kiser and capped by four consecutive free throws from Anna Rossi. The duo went a combined 13-for-14 at the free throw line in the first half to hold Candor at bay.

Hornick and Kylie Streeter scored the final two baskets of the period to make it 32-28 at the half.

Kiser scored all seven V-V-S points in the third quarter as the Indians trimmed the lead to three heading into the final eight minutes.

Leading the scoring for Candor was Hornick, netting 20 points on seven field goals and a 3-for-4 effort from the line. She also pulled down 14 rebounds. Allen contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. The pair also drained three 3-pointers apiece.

Five other Candor players found the scoring column. Field goals were made by Jen Hopkins, Emily Henry, Kadrianna Foster, Streeter and Brooke Wilcox. For Wilcox, a freshman, they were her first varsity points. Jennah Kareem provided seven rebounds, two steals and four blocks.

Kiser, expected to eclipse 1,000 career points in January, led V-V-S with 24 points on nine field goals and a 6-for-10 effort from the line. Rossi contributed 12 points on one field goal and 10-for-16  free throw shooting.

Candor is home Tuesday against IAC South Small School foe Tioga.
