PIERCE BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 200 IM

ITHACA - Owego qualified for finals in five of the seven events it was entered in at the 2018 NYSPHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving Championships Friday. The Indians will compete in three championship finals (top 8 in preliminaries) and two consolation finals (9th-16th in preliminaries) in the Ithaca College pool Saturday.

The highest-placing finisher in the preliminary round was Summer Pierce. The Indians' lone senior placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, posting her second-fastest time of the season, 56.9 seconds.

Pierce would break her school record in the 200 individual medley, recording a time of 2:07.62 to place 12th. Her old record, set last year, was 2:08.04.

Owego advanced to the championship finals in two relays, the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

In the medley, Ashleigh Gault, Emma Stephenson, Pierce and Katie Shoen combined to post a time of 1:49.3, good for seventh place.

Gault, Jennifer Scott, Pierce and Shoen finished eighth in the free, posting a time of 1:38.72.

Shoen also qualified for the consolation finals in the 500 free, placing 16th with a time of 24.14 seconds.

She also swam the 100 backstroke, taking 56th with a time of 1:00.8.

The Indians' 400 free relay of Stephenson, Jenna Bergmann, Scott and Gault came in 46th, clocking 3:49.97.

The finals begin at 10 a.m.
