SECTION IV GIRLS SWIMMING: OWEGO QUALIFIES FOR STATES IN 7 EVENTS (24 PHOTOS) (2018-10-04)

WATKINS GLEN - Owego posted five individual wins and a pair of relay victories at the Section IV Class B Swimming & Diving Championships here Saturday.

Summer Pierce and Katie Shoen were quadruple winners to lead the team to a runner-up showing behind Chenango Valley.

Pierce, the Indians' lone senior, won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.47. She also won the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 57.57 seconds.
 
Shoen, a junior who set the school record (24.06 seconds) during the 50 freestyle preliminaries earlier in the week, clocked 25.07 seconds to win the finals. She bested the field in the 100 backstroke, winning with a time of 1:00.40.

The duo teamed up with Ashleigh Gault and Emma Stephenson to win the 200 medley relay in 1:50.03. Jennifer Scott joined Pierce, Stephenson and Shoen to capture the 400 free relay with a time of 3:42.67.

Sophomore Kailee Payne was Owego's other individual winner, scoring a meet record 486.95 points to dominate the diving competition. She defeated her closest opponent by more than 100 points.

Stephenson placed second in the 500 free (5:38.79) and Gault was the runner-up in the 100 back (1:01.91). Gault added a third-place showing in the 200 free relay, teaming with Jenna Bergmann, Emma French and Scott for a time of 1:45.1.

French took fourth in the 100 back (1:04.76) and seventh in the 100 free (59.18). Scott placed fifth in the 100 fly (1:03.57) and seventh in the 50 free (26.31). Abigail Lavo contributed a sixth in the 500 free (6:05.99).

In the B finals, Owego's place-winners included Lavo, ninth in the 200 free; Allison Fisher, ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 16th in the 200 IM; Payne, 10th in the 100 breast; Taylor Pierce, 10th in diving and 13th in the 200 IM; Leah Watson, 12th in the 200 free and 100 fly; Bergmann, 14th in the 100 free and 16th in the 50 free; Ashleigh Allen, 14th in the 100 fly; Holly Kersten, 15th in the 200 and 500 free; and Allison Shoen, 15th in the 100 back.

Chenango Valley won the team title with 431 points while Owego was second with 406. Waverly took sixth (202) in the nine-team meet.

Event winners and those those who have met the state cut will compete in the state championships Nov. 16-17 at Ithaca College.
