STAC BOYS GOLF: DESPITE SOLID NUMBERS OWEGO WILL BE YOUNG, INEXPERIENCED (2018-08-17)

OWEGO - Youth and inexperience will prevail as Owego takes to the links at Pheasant Hills Country Club today to open the STAC season.

Seventeen players are on the Indians' roster, competing for six varsity spots and another half-dozen opening for exhibition matches. However, only a limited number of players bring much experience to the lineup.

"We only have three players this year with much experience," said head coach Chris Evans.
"Our No. 1 is junior Brendan Evans. He is the lone returning All-STAC Metro selection for OFA from last year. Brendan has an excellent short game and should, once again, be one of the top players in STAC.

"Our No. 2 right now is Nick Purtell, a junior who has been with us for a while. We are looking for more consistency from him - and if he gets his putter going could put up some low numbers.

"Our No. 3 player right now is sophomore Mason Rieg, a player who had an outstanding preseason. He is a long hitter. If he keeps the ball in the fairway he is in for a break-out season.

"Our 4-5-6 players are all relatively inexperienced. Early on in the season we will probably go with junior Kyle Koprevich, junior Karson Tofte, and first-year player Griffin Clark." Clark is a senior.

Those six players are slated for the season opener today against Windsor at PHCC.

"We play in an incredibly difficult conference," Evans said. "Vestal is perennially the favorite as they always have numerous all-state caliber players. U-E is always strong, M-E and J-C have excellent players, and our crossover matches against the West division are challenging, to say the least. Playing Ithaca at the famous Trent Jones Course at Cornell, taking on Corning at the Corning Country Club, etc., always prove to be formidable challenges."

Despite the challenges the Indians will face this season, Evans is looking forward to a fun and educational campaign.

"To say we have our work cut out for us is an understatement," stated Evans. "However, golf season always proves to be a lot of fun and a great learning experience. The coaches enjoy tremendous camaraderie, while the players always seem to get along well."
