STAC BOYS GOLF: EVANS, GAULT, RIEG LEAD OWEGO AT SECTIONALS (2018-10-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
ENDICOTT - Owego's Brendan Evans, Adam Gault and Mason Rieg all scored in the low 80s at the Section IV Class B championship at En Joie Golf Club Monday.

Evans, who has been the Indians' No. 1 player all season, shot 10-over-par 82. He was matched by Gault, who logged a career low. The duo tied for 11th place. Rieg was right behind his teammates, carding an 83 to place 13th.

"We had some pretty good scores," said Owego head coach Chris Evans. "Adam Gault, another career low, and Mason Rieg, a career best 83 as well."

The Indians' No. 2 player, Nick Purtell was unable to participate.

"He would have been a difference maker too," coach Evans said. "We would have caught Norwich."

Owego placed fifth in the five-team field with a score of 448, only four strokes behind the fourth-place Purple Tornado. Also competing for the Indians were Griffin Clark, who carded a 95, and Kyle Koprevich and Karson Tofte. They each shot 106, but only one of those rounds was used to finish out the team's 5-player total.

Seton Catholic won the team championship with a score of 390, with Windsor coming in second at 397. Susquehanna Valley was third at 416, followed by Norwich at 444.

SCC's Dylan Fahs claimed medalist honors with a 3-under 69. Teammate Liam Burtis also broke par, carding a 71. Brendan Evans and Gault tied for 11th in the individual challenge, and Rieg  tied for 13th.

Overall, Chris Evans was pleased with the team's performance.

"The tees were up, so I think it was easier for some, but I don't think it was the easiest thing in the world, because it's En Joie," Chris Evans said. "The rough was thick and the conditions weren't the easiest, but three of us held their own, especially Adam Gault and Mason Rieg, toward the end of the year playing much better. It's good stuff."

The coach is hoping it's all a positive sign for the future of the program, which was relatively young and inexperienced this season.

"I hope it's something more for us next year," he said, "but again, it's kids who have to play in the spring and summer a lot, get better. Hopefully, get some lessons and get out there and swing the clubs, and it's something to build on."

The only senior in Owego's lineup at sectionals was Clark, who is a first-year player.
