THE WEEK AHEAD: MORE TEAMS JOIN POSTSEASON FRAY (2018-10-14)

TIOGA COUNTY - Boys and girls soccer, boys golf and field hockey steal the spotlight this week as the Section IV playoffs get under way.

It starts Monday with the Owego golfers hitting the links for the Section IV tournament.

Tuesday brings the start of boys soccer with Owego hosting Union Springs / Port Byron in a 6 p.m. first-round game. Newark Valley and SVEC get started Thursday with the Cardinals hosting Walton and the Eagles visiting Dryden.

The ladies take to the pitch Wednesday with Newark Valley hosting Walton and SVEC on the road against Union Springs / Port Byron.  Owego's first game is Saturday at Dryden.

The field hockey postseason gets underway Thursday with Newark Valley at Whitney Point and SVEC at Moravia. Owego won't play until Oct. 27.

Football highlights Friday's action with Owego hosting Norwich in a showdown for the Section IV Class B third seed. Newark Valley and SVEC are on the road at Sidney and Chenango Valley, respectively.

Candor volleyball has three matches this week - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday - and needs just one win to clinch the IAC South Small School championship.

Following are some, but not all, of this week's top clashes. (A complete listing of all events for the week can be found on the school pages.)

MONDAY
BOYS GOLF

• Owego at Section IV championship at Enjoie Golf Club, 10 a.m.: Nick Purtell is coming off a strong showing in the STAC tournament, and he and Brendan Evans are the Indians' best bets for high individual finishes.

TUESDAY
BOYS SOCCER

• Union Springs / Port Byron at Owego, 6 p.m.: The eighth-seeded Indians (0-14) host No. 9 US / PB (5-9-1) in a Class B first round game. The winner visits top-seeded Oneonta (13-0) Friday.

WEDNESDAY
GIRLS SOCCER

• SVEC at Union Springs / Port Byron, 3:30 p.m.: If their records are any indication this first round Class B game could be a good one. Ninth-seeded SVEC is 7-7-1 and No. 8 US / PB is 8-7.

• Walton at Newark Valley, 3:30 p.m.: The Cardinals (8-3-1) open Class C plays as the fifth seed. Walton (6-6-2) is seeded 12th.

THURSDAY
FIELD HOCKEY

• SVEC at Moravia, 3:30 p.m.: The 8th-seeded Eagles (6-7) handed top-seeded Moravia (12-2) its only setback in Section IV play.

• Newark Valley at Whitney Point, 3:30 p.m.: The No. 6 Cardinals (7-7) face No. 3 Whitney Point (13-2). The Golden Eagles are four-time defending state champions.

FRIDAY
BOYS SOCCER

• SVEC at Dryden, 3:30 p.m.: The Eagles (8-7) are seeded seventh while Dryden (12-2-1) is the No. 2 seed.

• Walton at Newark Valley, 3:30 p.m.: Both teams received first round byes and head right to the Class C quarterfinals. The Cardinals (7-5) are the fourth seed and Walton (12-2-1) is No. 5.

FOOTBALL
• Norwich at Owego, 7 p.m.: Both teams are 4-2 in Section IV Division II and 5-2 overall. On the line is the third seed in the Class B playoffs.

SATURDAY
GIRLS SOCCER

• Owego at Dryden, 3:30 p.m.: The Indians (2-11), seeded sixth, visit third-seeded Dryden (13-2).
