SECTION IV FOOTBALL: NV FALLS TO ONEONTA ON LATE FIELD GOAL (2018-10-13)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY - What appeared to be a scoring tradeoff at its onset would turn into a defensive battle as Oneonta spoiled Newark Valley's senior day, kicking a buzzer-beating field goal to hand the Cardinals a 10-7 setback here Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets' Ryan Packard, whom some say is "money" on point-after attempts, cashed in on a last-second field goal try. With time running out, NV's goal-line stand stuffed Oneonta at the two-yard line, but there was little the Cardinals could do to prevent Packard from putting a 20-yard field goal attempt through the upright.

In the game's early minutes, it looked like the scoreboard would get lit up frequently as both teams scored on their first possession.

Brenton Rosenberg nearly took it to the house on the opening kickoff, rambling down to the Jackets' 15-yard line.

A few plays later, Andrew Obregon pounded it in from a yard out. Kyle Coffin's PAT kick gave NV a 7-0 advantage.

Oneonta returned the favor on its first possession as Dalton Wells scored on a one-yard run. Packard's PAT kick evened things up.

However, the defenses would take over after that.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Anthony Giovagnoli would provide the majority of his team's offensive spark, rushing for 80 of their 120 yards while carrying the pigskin 24 times. He also went 18-for-25 through the air for 136 yards and was intercepted once.

Giovagnoli utilized five different receivers with Graham Wooden catching nine passes for 76 yards. Wells added 40 receiving yards and another 40 rushing.

Rainy Ford led the NV's ground game, which pick dup 155 yards. He had 69 yards on 14 carries. Caden Bennett was still out with an injury, but Obregon did return from the one he suffered against Susquehanna Valley last week and rushed 13 time for 49 yards. Coffin carried 11 times for 35 yards. he only attempted one pass, that going for 17 yards to Ivan Aylesworth.

It was the first win of the season for Oneonta (1-6), which plays in the most competitive division in Section IV, and quite possibly the state. Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell are ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in Class B, respectively, and Owego is No. 26.

NV slipped to 5-2 with its second straight setback, but this loss has no bearing on the Cardinals' Class C playoff situation. They have already clinched the No. 2 seed in Division IV.

One bright spot for the program Saturday was two-way line standout Trentyn Rupert's confirmation that he is planning to play at Division I UConn next season.

Newark Valley heads to Sidney (7-0) Friday night for a regular season finale.
