ITHACA - Nick Purtell played one of his best rounds of the season at the STAC Boys Golf Championships Tuesday. The Owego junior broke into the top 20 in the 62-player tournament held at the challenging Robert Trent Jones Golf Course here.
Purtell finished the par-72 course with an 85, good enough to put him in a 5-way tie for 19th place. He shared that spot with the Horseheads trio of Seth Conway, Zach Locke and Dan Huten, and Susquehanna Valley's Luciano Giammarino.
Teammate and classmate Brendan Evans finished in a 3-way tie for 40th with a 90.
Oneonta's lone entrant, Evan Sitts, captured medalist honors with a 1-under 71. Vestal's Zach Keesler and Dan Harding were next in line at 73 and 77, respectively, leading the Golden Bears to a repeat as the STAC kings. Vestal scored 406, outdistancing Horseheads (418), Maine-Endwell (435), Corning (440), Windsor (444) and Chenango Forks (469).
The top 10 also included Seton Catholic's Michael Bucko an Dylan Fahs, and M-E's Steven DeGennaro with 78s, Alex Gage of Norwich with a 79, and Justin Wardell of Chenango Valley, Matt Printup from Horseheads and Binghamton's Max Stanton, each scoring 80.
