IAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY PULLS AWAY LATE TO DEFEAT SVEC, 5-1 (24 PHOTOS) (2018-09-14)

WAVERLY - Waverly scored two goals in the first eight minutes, then put the game away with three late goals in a 5-1 win over SVEC here Friday afternoon in IAC South Large School girls soccer action at the high school field.

Waverly coach Tara Hogan said the Lady Wolverines didn't play with same intensity they did in Wednesday's win at Notre Dame. She also tipped her cap to SVEC, which was playing its third game in as many days.

"I give a lot of credit to SVEC today," she said. "After playing a double-overtime game just yesterday, and a game the day before - they put a lot of pressure on us. They didn't give up.

"I think our issue today was that we got too comfortable, too early," said Hogan. "We didn't have enough intensity.

"We had a slow practice yesterday - recovering from our game versus Notre Dame, and it showed in our game today," added Hogan. "We didn't have that same level of energy that we needed."

Junior Melina Ortiz, off a feed from senior Kari VanAllen gave Waverly a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest.

Just four minutes later, Kari VanAllen took a throw-in from Cora Smith, and fired a shot toward the goal. It went through the SVEC keeper's hands and between her legs, and rolled into the goal to make it 2-0.

Waverly kept the pressure up for the final 32 minutes of the half, outshooting SVEC 10-0 in the first 40 minutes, but led just 2-0 at the intermission.

"SVEC was putting a lot of bodies in front of the goal so it made it difficult for us to find the net," said Hogan.

About five minutes into the second half, SVEC's Searra Allen banged home a shot from outside the 18 to trim the deficit to 2-1.

With 24 minutes remaining in the contest, Waverly senior Sarah Uhl launched a shot from well outside the box on the right wing, over the head of the keeper and into the side of the net at the far post to give the Lady Wolverines a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore Gabby Picco, who assisted on Uhl's goal, added a pair of insurance goals three minutes apart in the final 10 minutes to provide the final margin. Ortiz and Smith were credited with assists on the goals.

Waverly had a 23-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Savannah Tuttle recorded 14 saves in net for SVEC, while Waverly's Sidney Tomasso had two saves in relief of Kaitlyn Clark, who had one.

Waverly, now 6-1, hosts Sayre Monday night, while SVEC (2-4) travels to Tioga Monday afternoon.
