STAC BOYS GOLF: CORNING TOPS OWEGO, BUT INDIANS PROGRESS TOWARD GOAL (2018-09-13)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO - Tyler Thomas has been chasing down pars all season long. Also the top junior at the DeNunzio tournament late last month, Corning's No. 1 led the Hawks to a 204-229 victory over Owego at Pheasant Hill Country Club on Thursday.

Thomas shot 2-over-par 38 on the hilly rural layout - four of his teammates carded scores in the low 40s. Jairam Hathwar, Luca Neally and Carson Crane, Corning's 3-4-5 players, finished up at 41. Drew Beall added a 43.

The Indians' Brendan Evans had a heartbreaking finish to another wise impressive round. He went into the ninth and final hole at 1-over, but sent his ball out of bounds, just over the road that runs parallel to the fairway. He ended up with a 41.

Nick Purtell shot 45 and Griffin Clark, filling the No. 6 slot, added a 46. Adam Gault had a 48 and Karson Tofte had a 49.

Coach Chris Evans has set a goal of reaching a 225 team score at Pheasant Hill before the end of the season. With the exception of a minor hiccup earlier this week, the Indians have been progressing steadily. After starting the season with a 246, Owego has recorded 237, 232, 233 and Thursday's 229. The Indians have two home matches remaining in which to achieve the goal - Sept. 25 against Union-Endicott and Sept. 27 vs. Vestal.

The win pushes the Hawks' record to 6-3. Those setbacks have come from a combined total of 15 strokes.

Non-scoring players included Corning's Ben Tubbs with a 50 and the Indians' Mason Rieg with a 51.

Owego (1-8) visits Binghamton (2-6) on Tuesday.
