OWEGO — Cooper Dember held Chenango Forks (Curtis) in check and Owen Beach sealed the deal as Candor (Rose) avenged it's only loss of the Owego Little League 10U Tournament here Wednesday.
Dember struck out 15 batters and threw a one-hitter as Candor pulled out a 5-2 victory in a key C1 Division bracket game and Beach iced the win with a home run in the sixth inning.
The triumph was also a nice measure of revenge for a 9-8 loss to Forks during pool play.
Candor scored twice in the top of the first inning. Mason Rose led off the game with a single and Kellen Williamson brought him home with a triple. Dember plated Williamson with a single.
The initial two runs were big as Forks wasn't about to go down without a fight, staying within two runs until the final inning.
"We battled the whole game," Candor coach Cody Rose said. "They had a good pitcher and we just kept battling and putting the ball in play. Our kids came to play tonight and it was a lot of fun coaching. Love these kids."
With a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth, Candor gave itself a little breathing room when Hunter Cody singled and Beach homered
Meanwhile, Dember was lights out on the mound.
"Cooper Dember started on the mound and threw six great innings," Rose said. "He got himself into some jams and worked out of it.
"He gives me heart attack sometimes, but he always seems to collect himself and work out of situations that could go south. He did an amazing job today keeping the ball in the strike zone."
Dember helped himself out at the plate, going 2-for-2.
Candor takes on Nichols-Tioga at 10:45 Saturday on Beuter Field (Field 3). The winner adances to the championship round.
