OWEGO — They matched each other hit for hit, but unfortunately for Owego (Bensley), U-E (Pipher) won the battle of the scoreboard to post an 11-5 win in Owego Little League 12U Tournament pool play Wednesday.
U-E broke open a tight game with a five-run surge in the second inning to build a 9-3 cushion. A lead-off home run, four singles, an error and a dropped third strike highlighted the burst.
Owego would pick up a pair of runs in the fourth, but U-E countered with a pair of its own in the fifth. Owego's runs came courtesy of Nick Brown, Joe Palladino and Brendan Schofield singles, and a Dominick Ottaviani two-run double.
Owego opened the game with three runs in its first at-bats. Consecutive singles by Matt Higgins, Schofield, Palladino and Ottaviani led to the initial run. Elijah Lewis made it 3-0 with a one-out single to center field.
U-E went on top in its half of the inning on the strength of three singles and an error.
Ottaviani would finish the game 3-for-4with three RBI. Lewis went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Brown was 2-for-2, Schofield was 2-for-3 with two runs, Palladino went 2-for-4 with two runs, and Higgins was 2-for-4 with a run.
