IAC BOYS GOLF: NV'S KNIGHT, SVEC'S BANKS PICK UP NOTEWORTHY ACCOMPLISHMENTS (19 PHOTOS) (2019-05-22)

HORSEHEADS — The top golfers from SVEC and Newark Valley came away fro it would happen todaym Wednesday’s IAC Boys Golf Championships with a couple of noteworthy accomplishments.

The Eagles’ Jacob Banks placed second in the Large School tournament and third overall, and Newark Valley’s Billy Knight was named the IAC South Large School MVP.

Banks shot an 85 on the 6,332-yard, par-71 Soaring Eagles Golf Course on a picture-perfect day for golf. He would trail only the overall medalist, Dryden’s Kevin Gardner, and Small School medalist Sam Taylor of Tioga. Gardner shot 78 and Taylor had an 82.

The Eagles were fourth in the Large School tourney with a 558 team score. Joining Banks in the scoring were Taylor Brock with a 104, Luke Benjamin with a 119, and Alex Koski and Seth Neiss with 125s. Nathan Gillette carded a non-scoring 133.

Knight paced the Cardinals with a 101. Shawn Deer scored 114 and Matt Waterman had a 115. Jason Brown posted a 121 and Tucker Pettit had a 127.

Tioga would win the Small School and overall titles with a 465. AJ Middendorf and Jake Maciak shot 87 and 93, respectively. Ben Coddington posted a 95. Zach Nichols rounded out the team scoring for the blue and gold with a 108 and Joe Ellis had a non-scoring 117.

Dryden won the Large School with a 483.

Waverly competed with an incomplete team. The Wolverines were paced by Jack Knight’s 102. Hunter Elston shot a 122 and Ethan Williams had a 131.

Named to the South Large School all-star first team were Waverly's Jack Knight, Newark Valley's Billy Knight, the MVP, Shawn Deer and Matt Waterman, SVEC's Jacob Banks and Taylor Brock, and Notre Dame's Nate Murray. Waverly's Hunter Elston, Newark Valley's Tucker Petitt and SVEC's Luke Benjamin were second team picks.

The South Small School all-star first team included Taylor, who was chosen the MVP, Middendorf, Maciak and Coddington, Watkins Glen’s Georgio Fazzary, Edison’s Jack Shaw and Odessa-Contour’s Noah Hollenbeck on the first team. Watkins Glen’s Ethan Cary and Daniel Ely were named to the second team.

Middendorf was the recipient of the 36th annual Dean Winters Award as the league’s outstanding senior golfer.

Kopp was selected the 2019 Marty Conner IAC Golf Academic Award winner for being the senior with the highest academic average.

Teams return to action Thursday at the Section IV Boys Golf Championships at Delhi.
