SECTION IV TRACK & FIELD: OWEGO'S BOWERS, CHOYNOWSKI POST WINS AT CLASS B MEET (24 PHOTOS) (2019-05-21)

VESTAL — Nate Bowers and Joel Choynowski registered individual victories to lead the Owego boys team to a runner-up showing at the Section IV Class B Track & Field Championships here Tuesday.

Bowers out-kicked Windsor standout Josh Stone by just under five seconds to capture the title in the 1600-meter run, posting a time of 4:28.47.

Choynowski won the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:58.66, besting teammate Justin Hunsinger, who clocked a second-place time of 11:36.35.

Bowers joined Lewis Race, Cameron Szabo and Derek Sarrge to finish second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:37.51.

Colby Selover gave the Indians a pair of runner-up efforts in the throws, flinging the discus a season-best 146-8 and heaving the hot put 43-1.

Szabo placed third in the 400 in 53.65 seconds, Sarrge finished third in the 800 in 2:05 flat and Gavin Watkins took third in the 3200 in 10:22.37.

Eaan Hackett contributed a fourth-place showing in the 1600 with a time of 4:45.82.

Gus Cantella dashed to fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.47 seconds.

Race added a fifth in the 800, clocking 2:13.05.

The 4x800 relay of Jason Barnes, Gavin Bowers, Hunter Ellis and Skylar Welty finished sixth in 9:54.87.

Norwich dominated the event, racking up 186 points. Owego scored 79 to top Waverly’s 73 and M-E’s 69.

In the girls meet, Danielle Knapp and Katie Shoen each brought home a third-place finish. Knapp clocked a season-best 8:59.93 in the 2,000 steeplechase and Shoen posted a time of 2:32.06 in the 800.
 
Brittany Sanguinito took fourth in the 3,000 in 11:57.79 and teammate Alyssa Stephens was fifth in 13:27.17.

The 4x400 relay of Ashleigh Gault, Alex Senko, Nadiya Birch and Shoen finished fifth with a time of 4:58.43.

The 4x800 relay of Gault, Jennifer Scott, Alia Joyce and Sanguinito was fifth also, clocking 11:14.63.

Vestal took the team title with 182 points and Waverly was second with 119. Owego finished sixth with 22.

The top three finishers in each events plus provisional qualifiers advance to the state qualifier
