IAC BASEBALL: NV PUMPS OUT HITS IN WIN OVER WHITNEY POINT (2019-04-18)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley didn’t need a lot of hits during Wednesday’s no-hit gem by Jake Armstrong. However, the bats were needed to beat Whitney Point here Thursday.

Eight of the nine Cardinals hit safely in the 6-4 IAC Division 3 victory, producing 13 hits. They also walked twice.

NV was good at putting the ball in play. The Cardinals didn’t strike out until their final batter — although the Golden Eagle fielders were solid.

The Valley could have have chalked up more runs, but had two players thrown out at the plate, another at third and s fourth at second, and also stranded five runners in scoring position.

Alex Barnhart gave the Point an early edge, leading off with a walk and scoring a run.

NV got the run back on Evan Powell’s single and Joey Woodmansee’s double. Armstrong and Riley Malone both walked and scored in the second to make it 3-1.

Barnhart took advantage of three Newark Valley errors to score in the third, but Sam Durand singled and scored in the bottom of the inning, making it 4-2.

Trenton James would reach on an error and score in the fourth, but Durand answered back again. This time, he singled and scored in the fifth to push the lead to 5-3.

James walked and scored again in the sixth while Malone singled and scored his second run of the contest in the sixth.

Mikey Wandell pitched the first five innings for NV, striking out 10 while allowing just one hit and walking three. Woodmansee finished up, fanning five, walking one and surrendering four hits. Three of the hits came in the seventh, but failed to produce any runs.

Whitney Point had five hits, but no players with multiple hits.

Powell went 3-for-4 for NV, Durand was 2-for-3, Coffin was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Woodmansee went 2-for-4 with a double. Armstrong belted a triple, and Wandell, Brenton Rosenburg and Malone added one hit each.

The win moves NV (6-2, 5-2) a half-game ahead of Waverly (6-3, 4-2) in the division. The two meet Monday at 4:30 p.m. in Waverly.
