IAC SOFTBALL: CANDOR FIGHTS OFF MARATHON, IMPROVES TO 3-0 (2019-04-05)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Surviving a torrid seventh-inning comeback by Marathon, Candor improved to 3-0 with a 15-14 victory over the Olympians here Thursday.

The visitors sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, scoring eight runs to knot the score at 14.

However, the Indians’ Kailyn Edwards singled with one out in the bottom of the inning and stole second. Asia Curkendall was hit by a pitch, then Aryan Peters drew a base on balls to load the sacks with two away, and Searra Allen delivered a single to drive in Edwards for the win.

Candor jumped out to a 9-2 advantage through the first three innings as Allen, Addie Aman and Jennah Kareem scored two runs apiece — Kareem’s effort included a two-run home run. Shelby Swartz, Anna Greeno and Peters tacked on one run apiece.

The Olympians scored twice in the second an once in the fourth, but Curkendall singled and scored on Emily Henry’s sacrifice to make it 10-3.

Marathon put together a mini rally in the fifth, closing the gap to 10-6, but the Indians responded with four runs in the sixth to build an eight-run cushion. Edwards doubled to start the surge and Curkendall followed with an RBI double. Meg Henry singled, Allen added an RBI single, Aman sacrificed a run home and Kareem singled a run in.

Greeno would strike out three, walk six and surrender 14 hits on a cold and windy day, giving up 11 earned runs in the process, but still picked up the win.

Candor pounded out 16 hits. Curkendall went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Allen was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, and Kareem was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. The Indians’ bats accounted for four extra-base hits — Kareem’s homer, an RBI triple by Allen in the third, and the Edwrads and Curkendall doubles.

Edwards went 2-for-4 with two runs, Aman had a hit, two runs and three RBI, Greeno had a hit, run and RBI, Meg Henry and Peters each had a hit and a run, Emily Henry drove in a pair of runs, and Swartz scored one run.

Candor visits Odessa-Montour Monday at 4:30 p.m.
