YOUTH WRESTLING: OWEGO TRIO FACES ELIMINATION BOUTS AT NHSCA NATIONALS (2019-03-29)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Three Owego grapplers are trying to wrestle back to the podium after dropping their first-round bouts at the 30th Annual NHSCA Nationals here Friday.

Matt Laubach, Cam Bundy and Tyler Benjamin are competing in the Sophomore Division.

Laubach (106 pounds) received a bye, then fell by pin in 1:42 to Georgia place-winner Josh Noble. He faces Nolan Zigmont of Massachusetts next.

Bundy (170) suffered a 13-0 loss to Tennessee runner-up Parker Petersen in his opener and will meet Jake Boley from Colorado in his next bout.

Benjamin (182) lost to Dedric Marshall of Florida by fall in 42 seconds. he takes on North Carolina’s Lucas Wright in the consolation bracket.

Tioga’s John Worthing was the lone Tioga County wrestler to survive the grueling championship bracket battles.

Competing in the Senior division at 145 pounds, he scored a 17-1 technical fall over Colby Teague, a state champ out of North Carolina, pinned Daniel Connor of Delaware in 1:50, and scored a 10-0 major decision over Ethan Woods of Florida. He faces three-time Pennsylvania state place-winner Gabe Miller in the quarterfinals.

Younger brother Brady Worthing, competing in Junior 138, pinned Georgia runner-up Ricky Roberto in 40 seconds, then dropped a 7-5 decision to Jack Prendergast of NewJersey.

Austin Lamb, wrestling in Senior 160, received a bye and defeated Aushaud Evans from Georgia, 4-0, before falling to Arizona state champ Scott Kellenberger, 9-3.

David MacWhinnie, competing at Junior 132, suffered a 16-0 technical fall against Andrew Clark of New Jersey. He will meet Jackson Cramer from Maryland in the consolation bracket.

Dom Wood, wrestling at Junior 182, suffered a 26-second pin at the hands of South Carolina state champ Shawn Haile. He will meet Dane Csencsits of Pennsylvania in a consolation match.

In the Freshman division, the Tigers’ Mason Welch and Emmett Wood are competing at 113 and 152, respectively.

Welch dropped his opener to Ibrahim Ahmed from California, 14-2, and drew a bye in the first consolation round.

Wood scored a 14-4 major decision over Dylan Board of Virginia before falling to Brenden Severs of Ohio, 16-1.

The Tioga Tiger 3-Style club also has five wrestlers registered in the Middle School tournament, which begins Saturday. They include Barton’s Zachary Kotsubka at 75 pounds, Nichols’ Deakon Bailey at 85, Gianni Silvestri of Owego at 90, and Candor’s Caden Bellis and Barton’s Levi Bellis at 95 pounds.
