IAC TRACK & FIELD: S-VE HOPES TO BE COMPETE DESPITE JUMP TO CLASS C (8 PHOTOS) (2019-03-19)
BY TIM TAYLORTioga County Sports ReportSPENCER - S-VE has some good numbers out for the upcoming outdoor track & field season - including some promising letter-winners returning from last season. There is also some youth on board as the Panthers prepare for the upcoming outdoor track & field season and a move up from Class D to Class C.
"We've got about 27 boys, 26 girls out for varsity track this year, a lot of young kids, a lot of 9th-graders and 10th-graders," said Panther boys head coach Dewitt Grove. "We're looking strong though."
Grove expects S-VE to be competitive in the IAC this season.
"We're bringing it this year," he said.
With the move up to Class C the Panthers should see deeper and tougher competition in most events.
The Panthers' graduation losses on both the boys and girls teams were minimal, and S-VE has some solid athletes back.
"Christian Kunzman, he's going to be throwing the shot and disc a mile this year," Grove said. "We've got a couple of 9th- and 10th-graders. Cesar Figueroa, he's going to be running the 100-meter dash for us, really competitive. A lot of good kids. Levi Mickelson could go to states for the 800-meter, along with other kids."
S-VE begins the season April 2 at home against Waverly and Edison at 4:30 p.m.
Note: Dana Bennett will coach the girls team, but she was unavailable at the time to talk about her squad.
