WAVERLY — The Waverly-based Red Wave AAU travel basketball program, entering its 15th season, will hold tryouts Sunday at Waverly High School for its 8th- & 9th-grade, and 10th- & 11th-grade teams.
The 8th- & 9th-grade tryouts will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and he 10th- & 11th-grade tryouts will be from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. The hope for 2019 is to have four teams (8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th), and players will be informed early next week if they made a team.
“I look forward to another great season,” said Red Wave and Waverly High School boys basketball coach Lou Judson. “This program has really helped my own program over the years, but more importantly it has allowed me to meet so many great people around the Northern and Southern Tiers.
“Not only will these kids get good coaching, learn many fundamental principles of the game, and play against very good competition; they'll have the opportunity to meet others and build friendships with players from other schools,” added Judson.
The AAU season runs from March 10 through May 19. The Red Wave practices once a week, usually on Sunday, or later in the evening (normally 7 p.m.) after the Spring sports season.
The cost is $275. Players receive a Red Wave reversible jersey to wear — on Saturday’s of any tournament the teams wears red shorts, and on Sunday’s it wears black shorts. The Red Wave plays in four local tournaments, and one in Rochester. Of the five tournaments, three are Sunday-only (three games in one day.)
Additional costs include $16 for AAU insurance, and $15 for shooting shirt (warmup shirt) — last name on back for additional $6. Family and friends can purchase shirts as well.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a few donations over the years, and this year as well,” said Judson. “These donations allow me to keep the costs down of playing travel basketball, as well as keeping costs down of any apparel purchased.”
There is a $5 tryout fee. The Red Wave is an “outside organization” and is charge for the use of th facility. There will be an envelope labeled “gym fee,” please place $5 in the envelope.
