SECTION IV INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: OWEGO'S BOWERS, SZABO QUALIFY FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (13 PHOTOS) (2019-02-25)

ITHACA - Owego's Nate Bowers and Cameron Szabo posted distance race victories at the Section IV state qualifying meet at Ithaca College Saturday.

Bowers captured the 3200-meter title, running a time of 9:44.3. He bettered his seed time by 3.4 seconds. Bowers came in seeded second behind Nathan Lawson of Corning. Lawson ended up third (9:49.9) with teammate JT Ryan placing second (9:47.5).

Szabo won the 1,000, clocking 2:39.16. He was seeded second behind Owen Juan of Horseheads, who placed second in 2:40.13.

With their triumphs, Bowers and Szabo qualified for the 2019 NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island Saturday.

The duo also teamed with Lewis Race and Gavin Watkins to claim third place in the 4x800 relay, posting a time of 8:50.17.

Race placed fifth in the 600 with a time of 1:28.24.

Watkins finished 10th in the 3200 in 10:34.5.

Ian Hackett took 13th in the 1600 with a 4:54.67.

In the girls meet, Mikayla Worzel placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 33 feet, 3 inches.
