ALBANY - As the saying goes, live to fight another day. Cam Bundy did just that Friday night, defeating Mattituck's Ethan Schmidt, 8-1, at the 2019 NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships at the Times-Union Center here Friday.
Bundy scored a controversial takedown on the edge of the mat at the first-period buzzer to grab an all-important 2-0 lead. He would never trail and would go on to score big points in an exciting third-period finish.
Schmidt would cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape 1:19 left in the second period, but Bundy would make it 3-1 with an escape 34 seconds into the the third period.
Bundy turned away Schmidt's attempts to gain a takedown then, as the bout inched closer to its conclusion, Schmidt got extra aggressive. With 10 ticks on the clock, Bundy took his foe to his back for a 5-point move to seal up the victory and ensure he would return on day two.
The Indian sophomore, seeded seventh, will put his 37-7 record up against No. 4 Zach Williams, a 32-5 senior from Hannibal, in the "blood round." This is the round that determines which wrestlers will place and which one will go home empty-handed.
Either way, Bundy has compiled an impressive campaign, but a spot on the podium would be icing on the cake.
