IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: CANDOR DOWNS UNION SPRINGS TO CLAIM SMALL SCHOOL TITLE (2019-02-13)

CANDOR - Candor checked Union Springs early, then withstood a Wolves comeback attempt to win the IAC JV Small School championship here Wednesday evening.

The Indians doubled up U.S., 12-6 in the first quarter, and maintained their 6-point advantage at the half, 26-20.

Six different Candor players scored in the opening period, highlighted by Joey Marsh's 3-pointer. Marsh hit another trey in the second quarter, and Joel Dougherty and Zach Watson each contributed a three.

"We opened it up in the third quarter, extending to a 42-28 lead with 3:00 left in the third quarter," Candor coach David Russell said.  

Bryce Mills joined the 3-point club in the third period while Hunter Haynes and Dougherty scored five and four points, respectively.

Union Springs scored the last seven points of the third quarter to make it 42-35. The Wolves continued their run at the start of the fourth and closed it to 45-43. Candor closed out the game, 13-4, over the final stretch.

Haynes hit a shot from behind the arc and scored half of his team-high 14 points in the final frame. Mills chipped in with half of his 10 points in the fourth as well.

Russell called it a well-contested game.

"Both teams competed hard," he added.

Haynes also contributed six steals and three assists while Mills also had two assists and a block. Dougherty had 11 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a block; Marsh chipped in with 11 points, seven boards, three blocked shots and three steals; Cooper Thayer added eight points, 10 boards and two steals; and Watson pitched in on the win with four points and three steals.

Damon Brown and Hunter Martin scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, for Union Springs.

Candor finished its season with a 16-3 record.
