IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: CANDOR TURNS BACK UPSET-MINDED S-VE (2019-02-07)

SPENCER - Candor and S-VE dueled pretty evenly throughout the first half before the Indians were ablate create a little breathing room in a 63-54 IAC South Small School JV win here Tuesday night.

The host Panthers held a 19-18 edge at the end of the first quarter as Markus Brock and Konnor Kellogg scored six points apiece to offset 13 by Candor's Joel Dougherty.

Dougherty tacked on eight more in the second frame and Seth McBride added five points as the Indians flip-flopped things to take a 40-39 lead into the half. Kellogg notched 10 more to keep the Panthers close.

Candor took the third quarter, 15-8, then turned away S-VE in the fourth. Cooper Thayer erupted for eight points to pace the Indians and Kellogg put up another six.

The final eight minutes turned defensive with Candor holding an 8-7 edge and nobody scoring more than three points.

Dougherty knocked down five 3-pointers on the night and went 8-for-11 at the free throw line, with those stats contributing to a game-high 27 points. He would pull down 11 rebounds to make it a double-double and also blocked two shots.

Thayer finished with 10 points, going 4-for-5 at the line. Zach Watson had six points and three steals; Joey Marsh scored seven points, McBride notched five points; Hunter Haynes had three points, eight assists, five rebounds and five steals; Bryce Mills tallied three points and four assists; and Will Zimmer added two points and three steals.

Kellogg led the S-VE effort with 22 points. Brock scored 12, Conner Wallenbeck netted six, Connor Forrest and Tyler Doster notched four apiece, and Dominic Grier and Eric Wilson added three each.

Candor (15-3) hosts Union Springs (14-4) in the IAC JV Small School Championship Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
