NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley couldn’t pull away, but the Cardinals led all the way as they upset Watkins Glen, 49-44, in an IAC South Large School battle here Friday evening.
It was the first loss for the Senecas (14-3) to a team other than Waverly. Watkins came in ranked fourth in the state in Class C.
While the Senecas were missing their first five shots at one end of the court, NV’s Bri Beebe was getting things going at the other end. She fed the ball to Mackenna Nechwedowich, who turned it into an easy layup to start the scoring. Beebe would follow that up with a steal and would end up going to the free throw line, where she made it 4-0. After trading 3-pointers with the Glen’s Danielle Leszyk, Beebe turned a pass from Kendra Morris into a basket for a 9-5 lead.
Finally, Beebe would not have a hand in a Cardinal score when Hannah Ferguson went coast to coast for an 11-5 lead.
NV led 11-7 heading into the second quarter, but WG would make it a one-point contest at 17-16 on Leszyk’s second trey of the night with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the half.
The Cardinals would respond with a 7-2 run to end the half on top, 25-17, thanks to a Tressa Nechwedowich free throw, baskets by Mackenna Nechwedowich and Beebe, and three free throws from Allie Wandell.
Newark valley took control, of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Senecas, 16-10. Mackenna Nechwedowich scored seven of her game-high 14 points and Grace Gardner added four more. Mackenna Nechwedowich and Beebe would each hot one shot from beyond the arc during the surge.
Watkins would double up NV in the final frame, 16-8, but it wouldn’t be enough.
In addition to her 14 points, Mackenna Nechwedowich pulled down 13 rebounds to complete a double-double. She also blocked two shots. Beebe finished with 11 points.
Ferguson had eight points, five boards and two steals; Morris accounted for six points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals; Gardner had four points, six boards, three assists and a block; Wandell chipped in five points and Tressa Nechwedowich added one point.
