TIOGA CENTER S-VE took the lead early in the second quarter and pulled away in the second half for a 63-47 win over Tioga here Friday night in IAC South Small School boys basketball action.
With the win, the Panthers move into a first-place tie with Newfield in the Small School Division title chase. Both teams are 9-2.
Senior Pierce Hendershot scored six points in the first quarter, and junior Sam Taylor added a 3-pointer to help Tioga to an 11-10 lead after the first eight minutes. Sophomore James Sutherlin and senior Ben VanGalder each canned 3-pointers for the Panthers to keep the game close.
Six different players put their name in the scoring column for S-VE in the second quarter, led by four points by Sutherlin and a 3-pointer from Brian Gillette, to help the Panthers to a 24-20 halftime advantage.
Senior Nathan Mack scored 10 points in the third quarter, including a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays, and junior Noah Mack and sophomore Matthew Byrne knocked down 3-pointers in a high-scoring quarter that saw S-VE outscore Tioga 22-18 to take a 46-38 lead into the final eight minutes.
Taylor drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored seven points in the third quarter for the tigers, and senior Derrick Barto added four points.
S-VE put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 17-9 run, powered by five points apiece by Nathan and Noah Mack, four points by Sutherlin, and a 3-pointer from sophomore Matthew Merrick.
Nathan Mack led S-VE with 18 points and 19 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, while Sutherlin had 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Noah Mack had 10 points and seven boards.
VanGalder had seven points and three assists in the win, while Merrick added five points, Wilson Cooper chipped in with four points and six rebounds,
Hendershot led Tioga with 15 points, while Taylor scored 14 points, Barto added six points, and senior Alex Bloss and junior Thomas Cook chipped in with four points apiece.
Tioga, now 9-9, returns to action Saturday afternoon at O-M. The JV game tips at 2 p.m. S-VE, now 13-2, hosts Candor Tuesday.
